Pray for Christians Affected by ISIS and Other Extremist Groups
The Christian militiaman motioned toward the VOM workers, urging them to follow him deeper into the dark tunnel. Making their way carefully through the dusty passage, they soon arrived at a thick metal door. Opening the door, they found themselves inside a monastery where fighters from the self-proclaimed Islamic State (ISIS) had lived for months. The hillside was riddled with similar tunnels leading to the monastery on the hilltop.

When ISIS occupied the territory near Mosul, in northern Iraq, they built an extensive network of tunnels like the one our workers explored. ISIS used the tunnels as a way to launch surprise attacks on their enemies. But their first order of business after capturing the monastery was to tear down the ornate metal cross that graced its roof. ISIS believes Christians worship the cross as an idol, failing to understand that it’s the Savior who died on the cross and rose from the grave Who is worshiped.

Members of ISIS hate the cross and all that it symbolizes for “infidels” like us.

Raising a cross
ISIS fighters have been defeated in Mosul and pushed out of many of the areas they controlled. But as their so-called caliphate loses territory, there is growing concern that the group will resurface in other parts of the world, such as Central Asia and North Africa. We need to continue in prayer for ISIS and for our brothers and sisters affected by its violent jihad.

Request VOM’s free prayer guide, Christians Facing Islamic Extremists, to learn more about ISIS and other Islamic extremist groups as well as our Christian brothers and sisters who face their hatred. After requesting a guide for yourself, forward this email to friends so they can join us in prayer for our persecuted family.
