The imprisonment of Uyghur Muslims in northeastern China has been widely publicized, but fewer realize that Christians are also sent to these internment camps.
A Han Chinese Christian couple who left their home to plant churches among Muslims in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region were imprisoned two years for their Christian work. The Christians, who led an unregistered house church, were arrested and pressured to sign statements renouncing their Christian faith. When they refused, they were imprisoned in a reeducation camp.
The couple spent most of each day sitting rigidly on stools in a large room as government propaganda droned from loudspeakers. When they finally were released, they were warned to keep quiet about their experiences in the camp. Although they are under heavy surveillance, they remain committed to serving the Lord in China.
Christians in China are subject to Communist indoctrination not only in reeducation camps but also in prison, government schools and society at large. Chinese prison authorities try to “reform” prisoners by persuading them to accept Communist ideology — including atheism.
Pray for our Christian brothers and sisters who remain focused on Jesus Christ despite the attempted indoctrination.
