Nigeria: Militant Fulani Muslims Attack Christian Communities
On July 16, 2023, armed militants attacked two predominantly Christian communities in Benue state, Nigeria. The attackers arrived on motorcycles at around 8 p.m. and began shooting indiscriminately. Six people were killed in the attack.
Nigeria is geographically divided along religious lines, with a predominantly Muslim north and a majority-Christian south. Benue state, in north-central Nigeria, is mostly Christian, and believers there suffer frequent attacks by militant Fulani Muslims.
The terrorist group Boko Haram is reportedly supporting attacks on Christian villages by Islamic Fulani militia, who have concentrated their attacks in the central region of Nigeria. Terrorist groups and other Islamists in the north want to drive Christians out of the region and create a separate Islamist nation governed by Islamic law.
It takes great courage and faith to worship openly and follow Christ in the face of such attacks. In some places, it is difficult for Christians to even find food.
